Psyche spacecraft slingshots past Mars
NASA's Psyche mission flew within 3,000 miles of Mars on 15 May, using the planet's gravity to gain 1,000 mph and adjust course toward the metal-rich asteroid it's named after. Arrival expected summer 2029. The flyby also returned rare crescent images of Mars.
Tianwen-2 arrives at near-Earth asteroid this month
China's Tianwen-2 mission is set to enter orbit around Kamoʻoalewa in June, with sample collection planned for July. It'll be humanity's first close-up look at this enigmatic quasi-satellite of Earth.

Nvidia unveils N1X: its first Arm laptop chip at Computex
Jensen Huang revealed the N1X, a 20-core Arm SoC co-designed with MediaTek on TSMC's 3nm process, packing the same 6,144 CUDA cores as a desktop RTX 5070. It's Nvidia's first proper consumer CPU since the Tegra X1 and marks a serious challenge to Apple Silicon and Qualcomm.
Microsoft & Arm join Nvidia's "new era of PC" tease
Alongside Nvidia's N1X announcement, Microsoft and Arm posted matching GPS coordinates to the Taipei Music Center with the message "a new era of PC," hinting at deeper Windows-on-Arm integration and possibly new Surface hardware built around the N1X.

SFI26 application window opens for small farms
Defra's Sustainable Farming Incentive window one opens in June, initially limited to farms under 50 hectares and those not in existing ELM agreements. The simplified scheme offers 71 actions with a £100k annual cap per farm. First-come, first-served — early application advised.
Open Farm Sunday returns 7 June
This Sunday, hundreds of UK farms will open to the public for free. Guided tours, machinery displays, and livestock talks — a good chance to see where your food comes from and support British agriculture.

Wes Streeting resigned from Starmer's cabinet mid-May and declared he'd run for leadership, citing Reform UK's local election surge as an "existential threat." UK economy grew 0.6% in Q1 2026
The Office for National Statistics confirmed GDP expanded 0.6% in the first quarter, a rare bit of good news for a government besieged by leadership challenges and fractious internal polls.

US and Iran nearing peace deal after months of war
The US and Iran have agreed in principle to a deal that could wind down the Middle Eastern conflict. Talks continue this week, with Trump setting firm lines on a ceasefire and nuclear agreement. Israel and Lebanon officials also met on 29 May as diplomatic momentum builds.
US sets June deadline for Ukraine-Russia peace talks
The US has presented both Ukraine and Russia with a June deadline to end hostilities. Over 300 prisoners of war were swapped in February, but fighting continues in the east with Ukraine striking Russian oil infrastructure and military assets in a long-range campaign.
